Benefits of Seasonal Detoxification

At Awake Health, we believe the holidays are an important time to celebrate love, cherish family and have gratitude for good health. Now that we are in the New Year, it is also important that we take the time to rejuvenate our bodies, and treat them with a fresh start. Amongst the holiday chaos, we all get caught up in various social gatherings where we over indulge in rich foods or beverages, and while in moderation there is nothing wrong with this, moderation seems to not exist for many of us during this time of the year. High amounts of carbohydrates, refined sugar, and alcohol can leave us feeling inflamed, fatigued and sluggish.

Practicing a seasonal detox is an incredible way to cleanse our bodies of the lingering toxins that have built up over time, and is also a great way to jump start a new health regimen or motivate us to get back on track.

What many don’t understand about detoxing is that it allows our bodies to take a break. By cleansing the blood in our system, we are removing impurities and eliminating toxins through our kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system and skin. There is a period during a detox where we feel extra tired, hungry or fatigued,  known to many as a “withdrawal”. Through this period, when our bodies are excreting built up toxins,  we are actually letting our digestive system have a much needed break. The goal is to drink lots of water, get more rest and before you know it you will feel good as new and your body with reap the benefits of the cleanse.

With any detox, it is important to take things slow, be gentle with your body and give it all the rest it needs to heal and reset. Here are some key components for a successful cleanse.

Hydration

Water is essential for adequately hydrating cells and ensuring a successful cleanse. Without enough water, your body won’t be able to flush out toxins and will continue to leave you feeling sluggish. Water transports nutrients between our organs, and plays a major role in protecting our kidneys which are the body’s filter for waste. It is recommend that you drink approximately ½ of your body weight in ounces of water per day during a cleanse period preferably filtered through an absolute 1 micron water filter or by reverse osmosis for the best purity. A good rule of thumb is to take your weight, divide in it half and consume that number in ounces of water per day.

Exercise

Exercise is beneficial in so many ways. We know that is aids in weight loss, and stress relief. It also prolongs our life, alleviates depression, lowers limits of chronic disease and is an essential component to successfully cleansing our bodies.  If you don’t already have an exercise routine, reach out to your local gym, go on hikes, join a yoga class or even run laps. Anything to get your body moving for at least 30 minutes a day can combat a variety of health issues and can also benefit your mood and energy levels. While you are cleansing, it is recommended that you keep your exercise routine mild, as to allow your body the excess energy to heal and successfully detox your system.

Rest

Not getting enough sleep on a regular basis presents a higher risk for many different components of our health. It can elevate stress levels, present higher risks of developing disease and leave us with no energy to go about our daily lives. While you are detoxing, it is important to get at least 8 hours of sleep in order for your body to repair cells, reset your brain and maintain adequate health.

Diet

An important aspect of a good cleanse is the elimination of certain foods from your diet. The idea is to focus on good, whole foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and quality sources of protein. To the best of your ability, try to select locally grown, organic produce, non-GMO, grass-fed, free-range protein sources, and wild caught fish.
