Depending on a variety of factors, some people spend a portion of their life trying to save the hair on their head. Other people spend a portion of their life trying to remove the rest of the hair on their body. Regardless of wanting one of these options or both, there are better ways to go about it than using a razor blade and shaving cream.
At Awake Health, we offer patients laser hair removal services to deal with unwanted hair efficiently and effectively. People may find it tiresome to have to shave certain parts of their body on a regular basis, only to have the hair grow back fairly quickly. With laser hair removal, we can remove the unwanted hair and even help to slow down the re-growth process in the future.
LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Laser hair removal focuses a concentrated beam of light, laser, to specific areas of the body to remove the unwanted hair. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair before the energy converts into heat. The heat damages the hair follicles in the skin that produce them. This removes the hair at a deeper level instead of merely affecting the surface. The areas of the body that we typically treat with laser hair removal include:
- Legs
- Arms, armpits
- Back (chest in some cases)
- Upper lip
- Chin
- Bikini line
However, we can use this technology to remove hair in other places as well. One area we cannot remove hair from is the eyelid or anywhere near the eye. Various factors that can determine the level of success from laser hair removal include the contrast between the color of the hair and the skin. Dark hair on light skin will show the greatest results. Regardless, laser hair removal can still help to remove unwanted hair.
The main risks from laser hair removal are temporary and vary per patient. These include skin irritation and pigment changes. The irritation may involve temporary redness, swelling and redness appearing on the skin. In most cases, these symptoms dissipate in a few hours. Pigment changes are more common in patients who do not avoid direct sunlight before and after the appointment.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Before beginning the appointment, we can examine the patient to ensure that this is the right treatment for them and that the body can withstand the treatment. We will review the patient’s medical history and current condition, as well. Patients will need to avoid direct sunlight before and after the procedure, up to six weeks before the treatment. We can go over specifics during a consultation appointment.
It can also be beneficial to trim the area beforehand to help remove the hair above the skin. If there is too much hair above the skin, there is a chance the laser will cause burns or leave the follicle intact below the surface. The process will probably take two to six appointments spread out over the span of several weeks and months. Nonetheless, the appointments themselves will go fairly quickly.
It is important to note that at-home laser remedies are not going to be as effective as a professional treatment. Along with that, at-home remedies do not have medical supervision and can increase various risks. Since the Food and Drug Administration considers home laser treatments as cosmetic, there is a greater chance they will not be as effective as a professional medical laser treatment.
BENEFITS OF LASER HAIR REMOVAL
While there are some risks, there are also benefits to laser hair removal.
The appointments are fairly quick
While there are typically multiple appointments spread over several months, people will find that each appointment is fairly quick. However, if the area we are treating is larger, like the back, then the appointment may take an hour. If the area is the upper lip, then the appointment may only be a few minutes.
We can remove hair from most places on the body
Instead of having to struggle with bending and stretching to reach certain areas with an uncomfortable razor blade, we can use the laser to reach those areas for you. With the professional treatment, you will be able to effectively remove body hair at the follicle level instead of having to shave every few days.
Laser hair removal can delay future hair growth in treated areas
Another benefit is that these treatments can help to delay the hair growth process in the specific area. This way, you will not have to worry about hair growing back as quickly in the specific places. The results can vary depending on the number of treatments and area.
Professional Medical Supervision
With our supervision, we can ensure that the treatment happens without issue. We can help determine if there are any risks or problems that might occur. We can supervise the entire treatment process and make any changes that become necessary.
