Stem Cell Therapy
WHAT IS STEM CELL THERAPY?
Stem cells are our body's internal repair system. They are undifferentiated, meaning they have not become a specific cell type such as a blood cell or brain cell. Their role is to generate more cells to replace cells that have been damaged or destroyed. Sometimes, they can even differentiate, becoming muscle tissue, nerve tissue, or whatever is required to repair the body. Thanks to stem cells, our bodies are constantly regenerating. All the blood in our body is replaced every 120 days or so. Our liver completely regenerates every 3-4 months. We regenerate an entirely new skin every 27 days or so. Stem cell therapy enhances this natural healing function by isolating a large number of highly active stem cells and directing them to an area of need within the body.
HOW DOES STEM CELL THERAPY WORK?
It is an outpatient procedure. First, the patient’s stem cells are harvested from their adipose (fat) tissue and/or bone marrow. Next, the tissue is processed in the lab using an enzymatic process and a centrifuge, which allows the stem cells to be released. Finally, the stem cells are delivered back to the patient using one of several methods depending on the specific case: intravenously (into a vein), intramuscularly (into a muscle), subcutaneously (under the skin), or as a joint injection.
The procedure can take 1.5-3.5 hours depending on the type of stem cell harvesting.
WHICH CONDITIONS CAN BE TREATED WITH STEM CELL THERAPY?
We are still learning a great deal about the power of stem cell therapy and which conditions it can treat. Take this list as a starting point, and if you have questions about another condition, schedule a consultation with us.
- Most autoimmune conditions
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Crohn's Disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Most orthopedic conditions – Stem cell therapy may make the difference between needing surgery for that full knee replacement.
- Skin rejuvenation
HOW FAST SHOULD I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS?
It depends. Like most medical treatments, your response to stem cell therapy may differ based on your age, baseline health, diet, lifestyle, severity of an underlying condition, etc. It is important to note that we are treating patients with their own adult stem cells. Therefore, each treatment and response is unique to that patient. However, many patients report that they begin to experience results within 4 to 8 weeks. When the condition being treated is more severe, results may take longer to manifest, even up to 6-9 months. Incremental benefits can extend for up to 12 months after the initial treatment. Many conditions may require successive treatments depending upon the condition's severity and clinical response.
DOES HEALTH INSURANCE COVER THE COST OF STEM CELL THERAPY?
No, health insurance in the U.S. does not currently cover costs associated with any stem cell procedure.
WHAT IS THE COST OF STEM CELL THERAPY?
The cost varies with different types of procedures. However, it is designed to be both fair and competitive with other providers offering this state-of-the-art procedure.
ARE THERE PAYMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE?
Yes, there are several different options. Our financial coordinator will discuss all payment options with you prior to the procedure.
SHOULD I BE WORRIED ABOUT ANY ETHICAL ISSUES?
No. Our stem cell procedures use a patient’s own stem cells derived from his or her own fat or bone marrow tissue. We do not perform any procedures or undertake any research using embryonic stem cells.
IS STEM CELL THERAPY SAFE?
Yes, it is extremely safe. Since your own cells are used in the procedure, there is no chance of rejection. The most common side effect is pain or swelling at the injection site, which only occurs with about 3 percent of patients.
